The Abaya is the national dress of counties like United Arab Emirates and other Arab countries. It is the most common garment worn by Muslin women. The Abaya is essentially an overgarment worn by Muslim women and is considered the traditional "hijab" or Islamic dress.

An Abaya is a large fabric of clothing that covers the entire body except for the face, hands and feet. Most of the traditional Abayas are available in black color. Abayas are draped over the shoulders or head and can be worn with a niqab, which is a face veil to cover the face partially except for the eyes. Abayas are often teamed with long black gloves in order to cover the hands. The traditional significance of this attire lies in retaining the modesty in fashion and clothing for Muslim women.

The traditional Abayas are styled with a basic design comprising of small armholes and is worn over the head; over the scarf and the jilbab. Most of the traditional designs do not have fasteners or necklines and the ends are either pinned together or held by the hand. This design poses the disadvantage of minimal movement as in driving etc. However, the modern Abayas are available in newer designs offering the customers a wide variety to choose from as opposed to the traditional styles. These designs incorporate Velcro closures at the shoulders. The open Abayas are available in regular designs but with delineated necklines and buttons at chest level. The closed Abayas resemble long dresses usually with a zipper or buttons from the neck till the waist. These styles offer more movement and comfort as in driving etc.

Designs and styles range from plain, moderately plain to moderately detailed or intricately ornate. So this versatile attire can either be worn for daily wear, out door wear or even for special occasions. The plain designs usually comprise of a velvet trim at the sleeves or necklines. Modern Abayas are available in ornate designs like bead work or other detailing. Matching shawls are also available with the modern Abayas.

Abayas are available in a variety of materials like silk, rayon or polyester. Polyester or rayon Abayas are highly favored and recommended. Abayas usually drape very well due to its fluid textures, are lightweight and do not wrinkle easily. Black is the most common color in traditional Abayas. However, they are available in every conceivable color. The traditional Abayas are available in one standard size that fits all. If a person is less than 5"6 in height, the Abaya will need to be hemmed at the bottom. Again it is essential to focus on quality and other detailing. Close attention should be paid to the piping or trims at the hems, wrists and neckline as well as shoulder line. Make sure there are no loose threads hanging from the edges of the fabric and the fabric is of genuine quality. The bottom of the zipper should not be visible and it should zip smoothly and the piping or trim does not come its way.
