The Ghaghra-Choli is the traditional costume of the Indian states of Rajasthan and Gujarat. The Ghaghra is essentially a long skirt with a prosperous flare. It is usually embellished with a lot of mirror work and patch work imparting it a very glittering traditional appeal. The blouse or Choli forms the bodice of the costume and is equally elaborate with mirror work as well as patch work. Usually the Ghaghra and Choli are of same or contrasting colors. The Choli is again mid-riff baring and this costume is best suited for summer months. It is usually accompanied with a dupatta or Indian veil to complete the traditional look.

Today the Ghaghra is just not donned by the rural women; its appeal has caught the fancy of many designers and fashion houses. The modern version of Ghaghra is elaborately embellished with stones, sequins, brocade, mirror work, patch work, zardozi, intricate to moderate embroidery etc. and is teamed with a similar blouse or choli and a long veil. The cut and the design could either be a straight hugging skirt with a slender, narrow cut to a flared one with voluminous pleats. The Cholis range from a halter neck blouse to a backless choli or in the form of a sharara (a skirt like ensemble divided from the knee).

The Ghaghra choli is commonly preferred as a bridal wear which comprises of heavy embellishments; the most common color being red or maroon. For lighter occasions like parties, religious functions etc. moderately ornate to simple or plain versions are a suitable option. These again are available in myriad colors, fabrics, designs and prints to cater for a varied clientele and different occasions. The other popular colors available are maroon, burgundy, pink, red or wine shades; although many other vibrant colors and color contrasts are also readily available. The making of this outfit requires a considerable of craftsmanship and innovative imagination. The intricate detailing involved makes this costume an absolute sizzler.
