A Jilbab is a long, loose outer garment worn by Muslim women. The modern version of Jilbab should cover the entire body except for the hands, feet, head and face. Qatadah and Ibnu Abbas in their opinions said that, the meaning of extending the jilbab is to cover with a cloth the forehead and a part of the face, except for the eyes. Jilbabs can be decorated with colored embroidery, sequins, laces, beading and other embellishments to impart it an ornate appeal. Jilbabs are available in all sizes and a variety of colors, however black is the most common among them. However, they are also available in more vibrant or muted colors like mustard, olive, beige, navy, light grey, chocolate, all types of blue, sea green, rose, lavender and many others. Jilbabs can be made of cotton, moiré etc. However most Jilbabs are polyester based: regular polyester, poly blends or rayon. For the winter season, regular polyester jilbabs are higly favorable. "Peach Skin" jilbabs are recommended for summertime while the rayon and poly blends can be worn during any time of the year.

Cotton jilbabs carry a propensity of wearing out after a few washes as well wrinkle easily. Jilbabs made of wool are also available. Jilbabs that are decorated with ornate work like laces, sequins or intricate embroidery, need to be hand washed or dry cleaned. The traditional Jilbabs were designed with a mandarin collar sans pockets. The designs today have evolved over the years and are available in Peter Pan collars, high collars, v-neck suit collars, zippers, pockets, novelty buttons, A-lines, straight shapes with mock shells underneath and so on. Most of the Jilbabs are available in single breasted designs; however few are also available in double breasted. This caters to different body shapes and fashion preferences. Most of the Jilbabs are available in European or Arab sizes. It is higly recommended to go in for quality Jilbabs as they would prove to be more durable as well as easy to maintain. Make sure the quality of fabric is good and does not have the tendency to be frayed at the edges.
