The Niqab is essentially a veil in order to cover the face and is worn by Muslim women as a part of their "sartorial hijab". It is particularly common in Arab countries. However it is also worn in certain parts of North Africa, Southeast Asia and well as some parts of the Indian subcontinent. The Niqab covers the entire face except for the eyes.

Usually Niqab is made of cotton or polyester material. It could either have ties, a Velcro closure or even snaps which go behind the head over the hijab. It could alternatively be equipped with elastic bands. Although traditional niqabs are available in black color which is the most common, a wide variety of colors are also available. Certain designs have a flap to cover the eyes as well whereas certain niqabs are made of leather and embellished with gold coins or shells. However, these are more common among the tribal.

The "Boushiya" is a niqab style which is tied around the head and conceals the eyes. However, the eye veils can be raised to expose the eyes. Some styles have a flap to expose the entire face. The Pak Chadar is a style common to Pakistan. This is a piece of khimar, usually till waist length, and has built-in face veil. The veil is fastened by drawing it over the face from one side.

Most commonly, Muslim women prefer to buy their niqabs online especially due to the wider variety available. However, niqabs that are equipped with snaps or Velcro closures need to be tried first to make sure they fit perfectly as they may be small for the head. Make sure you buy the right sized niqab if you happen to wear glasses. If one prefers to wear the half niqab which comprises of a one piece cloth panel with elastic, it is advisable to wear it underneath the khimar or hijab. The Boushiya can be worn either over or under the head scarf. However, make sure that the color or designs match and not look too odd. This of course depends on personal tastes. Below is a brief description and an instructional styling guide of face veiling made of a basic 40" x 40" scarf.

Syrian Niqab style:
1. Fold the 40" x 40" scarf to form a triangle. Place this at the center of the head and follow the basic pin style.
2. The right end is then drawn across the face under the eyes or nose and pinned behind the head.
3. Fan left end across the shoulder and tuck or pin it into the garment.
It is advisable to wear the niqab at home as well in order to get used to it as many women find it difficult to breathe or see in a niqab when they first start wearing it.
