A rug is essentially a floor covering of a piece of thick heavy fabric (usually with nap or pile). It can also be described as a floor mat or small carpet, especially made of real or fake animal pelt. A great deal of aesthetic skills and imagination goes into the making of rugs in India. Various elements both traditional as well as contemporary are incorporated into various patterns and designs in rugs; depicting the traditional heritage of India. Due to its unique appeal, these Indian rugs are fast gaining international popularity as well. A perfect blend of geometric designs, motifs and magical color combinations make these rugs a perfect home décor accessory which could enliven and perk up any flooring of the house. Traditional rugs are pile less cotton woven in a single color, with or without a contrast border or in stripes of different colors and varying thickness. A Hessian (coarse jute fabric) base is used to make rugs in chain stitch embroidery and usually has an additional lining of gunny sack cloth. Skillfully stitched rugs or even the more ornate versions of it make lovely wall decorations or hangings and mattresses as well. Besides serving the above purposes, they can also be used as horse and camel saddles. The grass mat also called "chattai" in Hindi, bears a traditional significance in Indian culture. These are an important component of any Indian household; however its utility has evolved over the years. Mats are also made of wheat or rice straw, weeds and finely sliced bamboo. The bottom o the mats are usually coarse in texture, while the upper surface is fine textured to provide comfort while sitting on it. Bengal and Assam adopt the method of collecting madder grass, immersing it into water and then weaving it in its natural red color. The state of Kerala in India is famous for producing screw pine mats, which are essentially two ply mats. Similarly Tamil Nadu is famous for producing Kora grass rush mats. Kora grass is used to make superior quality fine mats. Janamaz durries or prayer mats are commonly made in Uttar Pradesh. Bhawani Durries are famous to Coimbatore while silk and cotton durries are made in Salem. Shatrangis; a famous type of mat is made in Warrangal, Andhra Pradesh. Sholapur in Maharashtra also produces fine quality rugs. A fair deal of skilled craftsmanship is involved in producing rugs which serve perfectly well both in terms of aesthetic as well as utilitarian purpose. Hand woven rugs could be a blend of cotton and jute and feature geometric or floral patterns in vibrant or contrasting colors. Usually natural dyes and traditional weaving techniques are involved to produce the rugs.
