A shawl is a simple clothing item that is worn over the shoulders and covers the upper body and arms. However, it is also used to cover the head especially during inclement weather. It is a rectangular, square or oblong piece of cloth. A shawl is worn primarily to keep oneself warm, however it is also worn to complement an outfit or for other symbolic reasons. The Jewish men don a famous type of shawl during prayers and ceremonies called the "talit". In India, the most famous shawls are the Kashmir shawls and are highly popular in the western countries as well. The most noteworthy characteristic of the Kashmiri shawl is its elaborate design pattern, of which the "cone" pattern is the most prominent. It is a perfect integration of balance, rich color tones and contrasts, brilliance and depth. These characteristics are basically attributed to "pashmina", which is a fine, soft, short, flossy quality of wool found on the shawl-goat, a variety of Capra hircus inhabiting the elevated regions of Tibet. There are several varieties of pashmina, but the finest is a strict monopoly of the maharaja of Kashmir. Besides the shapes and patterns, these shawls can be further classified into: loom woven shawls called tiliwalla, tilikar or kani kar - sometimes woven in one piece, but more often in small segments which are sewn together with such precision that the sewing is undetectable and the embroidered shawls called amlikar, in which over a ground of plain pashmina is worked upon by a needle to form minute and elaborate patterns. Shawls are donned also because of their high fashion quotient as they can perfectly complement and accessorize any traditional, indo-western or western outfit. The cashmere shawl is made of the soft fabric made from the wool of the Cashmere goat. Shawls woven out of pashmina, merino and cashmere wool are exceptionally soft, smooth textured and warm. Woolen shawls are also available in myriad colors. Moreover, they are quite light-weight and trendy. Printed woolen shawls are of superior quality wool and are available in various prints, contrasts and colors and look quite stylish. An extensive range of embroidered shawls are also available using different threads of fine quality like: silk. Designer and warm; they impart a traditional appeal to the outfit. Embroidered Pashmina Shawls are very much favored due to its exquisite appeal. Impeccably crafted pashmina shawls with embroidery work spell luxury and elegance. Jacquard (highly figured fabric woven on a Jacquard loom) Print Shawls are also available in a wide variety of colors and prints, are exceptionally warm. Knitted shawls made up of fine wool, beaded shawls and evening shawls, for daily wear also have a lucrative market. Exquisite craftsmanship is employed to churn out the best Indian shawls which are characteristized by panache, ethnicity, quality, durability and they make wonderful fashion accessories.
