The Indian tradition of Ikat weaving, achieved by yarn-resist dyeing, is more than 1500 years old. Prior to weaving, portions of the fabric yarns are tightly wrapped with other yarns in carefully planned sections. These wrapped portions resist the dye when the skein of yarn is dip-dyed, resulting in a color pattern which is revealed only when the yarns are woven into fabric.
